Digital Drugs & The End of Deep Focus

The internet and diving into cyber life offer a temporary escape from the pain we carry in our hearts. Yet, they also perpetuate the ongoing suffering we face in life.

Its taken time for me to learn how to keep my inner self happy and engage in deep work amidst the digital storm we're facing.

Here's what I've discovered:

It's all around us. What I mean is, it's part of the current global climate. We're in a massive period of change, and there's a sort of waiting game happening. Old issues are resurfacing and need to be cleared away. This is a collective upheaval, and the universe is urging us to dig deep within ourselves. The entire world is grappling with this challenge, and it's real. No matter how disciplined we are or how we arrange our lives, it's just part of the environment. Acceptance is key.

There's a deep well of pain inside all of us. It's incredibly painful to be in our bodies and in our emotional selves. It takes time, effort, and determination to access and transform this pain. The odds are stacked against us in feeling this internal wound. Within this quiet pain lies our deepest creative potential and where the most profound healing can take place. If we don't face, understand, and integrate this well of pain, we're trapped in a cycle of searching for temporary relief outside ourselves, constantly reacting to this pain like a hamster on a wheel. If we don't carve out time and effort to delve into this void, our work and productivity remain superficial, mere content that blends in with the endless stream of mind-numbing material out there. It simply isn't deep work.

Apps like SelfControl and Freedom on our phones and computers are incredibly helpful in making time for deep work. I block myself from Facebook, Instagram, and email in the evenings until 9 am so that I'm not compelled to start my day with technology.

I enjoy regular dopamine fasts, though they're quite challenging!

Be present with your inner self. It's now a rare treasure to be in nature without a technological device, a rare and agonizing treasure that has us constantly checking our pockets for the phantom vibration of our phones every 10 minutes. What happens to Bitcoin if I don't check the prices every hour? Will my money disappear? What happens if I don't respond to a text immediately engaging in nothing more time wasting rubbish? oh no ! they might think I am being rude or don't care about them?

You don't owe anyone anything. This constant anxiety is the quickest way to knock us off balance. It's assumed that every email and text message deserves a mindful and heartfelt response. We're afraid of hurting people's feelings and want them to feel important. Sometimes we sacrifice our deep inner peace to accommodate others. According to my iPhone, the number of text and Facebook messages I've engaged with has increased by about 60% since COVID, and I haven't seen most of these people in over 5 years! Very few of these messages add real meaning to my life. We don't owe anyone a response simply because they reached out, and there's no unwritten rule about how quickly we should respond. My commitment is to my inner self, not to pleasing everyone who contacts me.

Morning meditation, exercise, breathwork and a good sweat session is the best way to set a new course for the day. Checking technology first thing in the morning puts us on a dopamine wheel all day long.

It's enormously painful to commit to your inner self and engage in deep work. After years of training in the opposite direction, being alone with ourselves can be boring, agonizing, and nearly unbearable. This commitment is for light warriors who understand the importance of humans remembering who they are and why they came to this planet. I'm convinced that our consciousness is under assault. There's a war over our mental space. And it's critical to develop habits that will allow us to reclaim that space.

Wake up people, digital use should be responsible as its costing you your health and your life. Reconnect with yourself and deep, meaningful, transformative states of awareness.
